September 12,  2004  4th Annual CSUS Aquatic Center Raw Potluck

Important!!  Please DO NOT come to this event without reading this ENTIRE page!

The Aquatic Center was a great setting for our August 2002  Potluck.

From L to R:  Suzan, Margie, Joyce, Cindy, Richard, Marilyn, Kris,  & Peter

Driving Directions

Schedule:

           Arrive for Recreation                   2pm    (optional)

           Recreation Time                          2 - 4:00pm

           Raw Food Potluck                      4:00pm

Please come ON TIME!   The Aquatic Center closes at 5:00pm and we will need to be off the premises by at least 6:00pm.

The idea behind this annual potluck:  Come an enjoy some kayaking, biking, swimming, canoeing if you want.   You will rent and pay for your own items and they are very inexpensive (less than $10 per hour).  We are NOT a reserved or sanctioned special group.  The center charges more for this.  So, just show up, find some friends and enjoy yourself.  Do not ask the staff where the Raw Potluck is.  They won't know what you're talking about.  The center is not very big.  There are several picnic tables and look at these if you arrive solely to eat.  In the past some folks have had difficulty finding this location.  Very exact directions are below.

Notice that this schedule means you'll have to start your Raw Dishes earlier than normal.  If you need to keep your dish cool, you may need a cold pack and some blue ice.  There will not be refrigerators available.  If you are coming for recreation, you should probably bring your food to the recreation area and stash it in a shady spot.  Otherwise, you may leave food in your car and get it when we are ready to eat.

An RSVP for this event would really be appreciated, but is not mandatory.  So, if you're a last-minute person, come on over.  But, if you're a very organized person, send me an RSVP & let me know what activity you are interested in (sailing, kayaking, cycling, canoeing, pedal bike).

Special Potluck at the CSUS Aquatic Center:

The Aquatic Center is a Class-A recreation center with very modest rental prices.  It is one of Sacramento's best-kept secrets for outdoor Summer fun.   It is situated near the dam on Lake Nimbus.  For the past 4 years Raw Sacramento has  held a fun potluck at the Aquatic Center.    Create your own agenda for this potluck.  We will eat at 4:00pm.  However, you are encouraged to arrive at 2 or earlier, depending on your preferences.   This would be a great potluck to bring children or friends to who may be new to raw foods, and who might enjoy the lakefront recreation.

What is there to do at the Aquatic Center?   You can rent the following equipment:

I do not have time to verify these prices this year (2004).  Suffice it to say, however, that the prices are cheap!

Bicycles $8/hour can be ridden around lake Natoma & over the Folsom Bridge (extensive bike trails).  You may also bring your own bicycle.
Kayaks  $8/hour   (1 man)  $10/hour for 2 man Swimsuits are advisable.  (Your butt will get wet).  It's a great way to beat the heat.
Hydro Bikes $10/hour   (these are new, fast & fun) 1-person catamarans, easy & stable for anybody.  You sit on them like a bicycle.   See photo below this table
Canoes $10/hour   (2 man or 3 man:  same price) Standard Aluminum.   (Kayaks may be more fun)
Rowing Shells $8/hour (requires certification)
Sailboats $12/hour (requires certification)

Hydro Bike

When you come to the Aquatic Center, you may also bring your own bicycle or kayak and avoid any user fees.  The bike trial goes downstream past the Nimbus Hatchery, or upstream through State Park lands on a nice bike trail.  Riding all the way around Lake Nimbus is a great trip and you should allow at least 1 hour for this.  But, if the weather is warm, kayaking might be the better way to explore the lake.   Riding a bike into the adjacent state park incurs no entry fee.  Driving a car into the state park will.  Park at the Aquatic Center where parking & entry is free.  This year they have renovated the Aquatic Center.  There is a traffic circle that you can drive into that would be close to the picnic areas on the waterfront.  You may want to stop in the traffic circle, unload your picnic items and then park your car in the lot.

Although there are picnic tables at the Aquatic Center, I recommend you also bring your beach chairs.  There are often other groups there and I can't guarantee we will get the available picnic tables (but we probably will).  We are not going to be registered as a group at the center, to save you money.  All equipment rentals will be your own responsibility.  You are encouraged, however, to make arrangements to kayak or bike ride with other members of the group as you might wish.  If you come to use a Kayak,  I urge you to be wearing a swimsuit.  This is a wet experience even if you never tip over.

Are you a sailor?

If there are good winds, I may rent a sailboat.  I would try to include anybody who may be interested in sailing, and an RSVP would help in this regard.

Lastly, if this is your first potluck with us, or your are relatively new to our group, would you please take a minute to read our general potluck guidelines.

Very Easy Directions to the Aquatic Center:

We've had some people go to Nimbus Flat State Park by mistake.  If you do, you are very close.   Please follow these directions carefully, and you'll have no problems!

From Sacramento:  Head East on Hwy 50 to Hazel Avenue.  Go left (North) at the exit ramp onto Hazel Avenue. Once on Hazel, get in the rightmost lane and proceed to the 2nd Signal.  This street [conveniently] has two names:  'Gold Country BL' and 'Nimbus Street.'   (If you were to turn left, you would go to the Nimbus Hatchery).   Make a right turn.    You should notice that this is the LAST opportunity to turn to the right BEFORE going over the bridge over the American River.  After you make the turn, you should see a sign which indicates you're at the CSUS Aquatic Center.   If you end up at the State Park (Nimbus Flat) you turned off of Hazel too soon.  Return to Hazel and proceed to the very next signal.

From Placerville:  Exit 50 at Hazel.  At the offramp go to the right onto Hazel and remain in the right lane.  Proceed less than 1/4 mile to the signal which  [conveniently] has two names:  'Gold Country BL' and 'Nimbus Street.'   (If you were to turn left, you would go to the Nimbus Hatchery).

From Roseville:  Proceed down Hazel.  When you are going over the bridge over the American River, get into the left lane.  At the signal immediately after crossing the bridge ('Gold Country BL' and 'Nimbus Street') turn left into the Aquatic Center.

Where will we eat at the Aquatic Center?  We will eat at the picnic tables which will be in the vicinity of the Administration Building and the East Shore (which looks across to the State Park).   The Aquatic Center has been undergoing an ambitious building plan this year, and we will all need to be good sports.  There are bathrooms on site.    If you want to enjoy the sunshine, you may want to bring appropriate clothes and a lawn chair.
