Raw Sacramento News Newsletter to Raw
Sacramento Wednesday, March 24, 2004 Friends, we've
had a long gap since our last formal newsletter. But, we're at it
again! Mark was away on an extended time in Florida and the Bahamas.
You can read about his 700-mile
raw cruise through the 700 Bahamanian islands here. By the way, He
visited a wonderful vacation spot you may be interested in....a
yoga
retreat center in Nassau. For a paltry $45 per day you can enjoy 2
yoga classes per day and this includes vegetarian meals, and modest lodging.
There are yoga retreat centers like this all around the USA, on both coasts.
If you want a very cheap and healthful vacation, read more about it in this
article from
'Budget Travel.'
Canistel anchored off Eleuthera Island Mid-February 2004 I
often spent several days enjoying beautiful little coves like this all by
myself. With the nearest villages 80 miles away, the stars at night were
awesome. Has eating a
mostly raw diet helped you? I again solicit your raw food testimony
for inclusion on this site. This might take you 1 hour, and it might
drastically improve someone's quality of life! Why do I say this?
Because one dear lady in Raw Sacramento heard how raw foods had helped someone
else and after she made a commitment to 100% raw, she lost 172 lbs!

Next Monthly Potluck: April
4 in East Sacramento Here are some
great recipes for refried beans, mashed potatoes, salad and honey mustard
dressing. (They are also now on our RECIPES
page). Steering
Committee Meets April 6 (Tuesday) at 5:30pm at the Co-op's dining area
(outside if weather permits). All RawSacramento members are welcome to
attend. Why do we have a steering
committee? Should you join the Steering Committee? If you desire
to help our organization with a few hours a month effort, we urge you to join
the SC. We can use individuals to take on special 1-time projects, or to
serve monthly in a fixed capacity. Mark is planning to move away from
Sacramento within 60 days, therefore we are in particular need of individuals
willing to oversee matters. Raw Restaurants
Update: Mark has updated our
Restaurant links pages, having eaten at a number of good new restaurants in
Florida, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles. Also, there are some updates for the
local options (San Francisco area). Can we ever expect a raw restaurant in
Sacramento? I don't know. I know we have several individuals who are
considering it, along with catering businesses. Generally speaking the areas that have thriving restaurants are generally
centered in population centers: (San
Francisco, San Diego,
Dallas,
Miami Beach,
New York,
Los Angeles, Las
Vegas,
Chicago, Tempe/Phoenix,
Minneapolis).
At this point, Sacramento may have too few people, or the raw food movement may
yet not have sufficient penetration in society. But, given the
growing interest in raw food, it is certain that one day in the next few years
we will have a raw food restaurant. Earth Song in Nevada City removed raw
items from their menu, but are finding that when they are put in the deli they
disappear immediately. So, they say they will add raw items to the
restaurant menu again around 4/10/04. Mark visited
Juliano's a couple
times in the last weeks. He said the food was good, prices reasonable, but
portion sizes quite small. Mark's favorite restaurant thus far is Go Raw &
The Raw Truth in Las Vegas (now owned by the same couple).
Food Without
Fire in Miami Beach may have the best desserts.
Sublime
in Ft. Lauderdale has the most elegant ambiance on the East Coast, with
Roxanne's leading on the West Coast. And,
Ecopolitan
in Minneapolis has the best website of any!
Will Sacramento ever have a Raw Restaurant? New in San
Francisco: Here's a write up on
The Lombard Coffee
Shop, a New Raw Restaurant, from a Raw Newsgroup in San Francisco.
I have not eaten at the Lombard Coffee Shop as yet. But, you may find this
article of interest: Lombard Coffee Shop at 1972 Lombard Street (415-923-1052) in San Francisco
is re-opening. We will be serving high quality whole, organic vegetarian foods
with a focus on Living Foods. One of the goals of the restaurant is to
provide affordable vegetarian food. The original name was not changed so we can
focus our budget on quality food! Our goal is to provide high integrity food. Two consultant chefs, Elaina
Love and Matt Samuelson, have done the menu planning, restaurant setup, food
procurement (organic, of course), and staff training. They were the chefs on the
preview night on the 16th and will also guest chef from time to time. We will
open on January 24th and will have formal grand opening in a few weeks when all
the new furniture and artwork arrives. Matt is the head Chef and an instructor at Living Light Culinary Arts
Institute (LLCAI). LLCAI is a premier living foods chef school founded by
director Cherie Soria. Elaina Love is the owner of Pure Joy Living Foods,
where she focuses on bringing living foods classes, products and has done the
menu planning, restaurant setup, food procurement (organic, of course), and
training. They were the chefs on information to the world through her website
www.purejoylivingfoods.com. She is also a master chef and an instructor at LLCAI. Another chef/Chinese Herbalist, Nam Singh, has developed Winter Tonic and
Energetic Vegetarian Soups (cooked) based on Chinese Traditional Medicine. Nam
Singh has appeared on the Yan Can Cook TV show teaching Chinese Herbal Cooking.
Finally, Winnie Szeto was very helpful shopping and inventory advice.
We will also have a wide selection of teas (Herbal, Chinese, and Japanese).
Organic fair trade coffee will also be available. Regards, Leland Jung lombardcoffeeshop@sbcglobal.net
415-923-1052 Where to buy
Coconuts--I have defrocked SF Market. Don't shop there!
Here's why. Why would you want
to eat coconuts? They are among the healthiest, most anti-viral, foods on
Earth. They are the best source of MCFA's (medium chain fatty acids) which
support the brain & nervous system.
(Speaking of Coconuts, below is a picture of the Caribbean variety....not as
sweet as the Thai coconuts we buy locally)....
After going 'shopping' on shore (Robinson Crusoe Style) I returned in the dingy
with coconuts and bananas.
More about my cruise here. Medicine
American Style--According to a recently published book by 5 collaborating
doctors, entitled "Death By Medicine" doctors kill more people than all other
causes of death in America--a staggering 1 million Americans per year.
Many times this are injured or maimed by their doctors. Deaths and
injuries caused by doctors are greatly under-reported for reasons which should
be obvious. The figure reported (the tip of the iceberg) is equivalent to 6 jumbo jets crashing every day.
Do you think many people would continue flying? No, the FAA would close every
airport in America. (Maybe they should do this with government-licensed
physician's offices).
Dr. Mercola's review of Death by Medicine. Get Well & Be
Healthy! Attend 10 consecutive Monday evenings
raw food support classes. This is an
excellent curriculum with great video presentations, raw food samples and demos.
The class is taught by Brenda Kent. The session just restarted on March
22. It would be a great time to join in on this class. Pam Benson
also highly recommends it. Janet Ahlbrecht has attended it 3 times,
finding it very valuable for support and staying raw in spite of our families,
co-workers, etc.

(This is usually a great event-Mark). Can you help Raw
Sacramento? Here are 2 ways
you could help Raw Sacramento: 1. Hosting a
2004 Potluck I have updated our
potluck schedule indicating the dates in 2004
for potlucks. What we need now are homes at which we could have these
potlucks. Our participation is trending up—our November potluck had 40
individuals. If you are the host, you do not need to prepare a dish. And,
you don't need to drive. The food comes to you! Here's some
information about hosting a potluck.
2. Writing a Raw Food Testimony
Have you eaten much more raw food than previously for at least 2 months? Did you
experience any health improvements? Would you be willing to write a 'Raw
Food Testimony?" We would like to post more of these. If you
have concrete, documentable health improvements and can write a few paragraphs
about your experience, it may influence and help others. Would you please
send us
your Testimony?
Do you need a personal raw food coach? We have a couple
in Sacramento. Here's Shar.
Here's Maya.
