Important Information from Mark Blackburn:   I hope you all had a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend!  I would like to say Sayonara, it has been my pleasure working with you all.  I am leaving the website responsibilities increasingly in the hands of the capable and talented Laura Ammons.    I have enjoyed working with Raw Sacramento during the past 4 years.  I hope to participate in events when I am in town, and am sure that this unique, special, and crucial support group will continue to serve it's members well.  I have to move on to other priorities and needs which beckon to me.

Some recent website revisions made include a place where articles may be posted & you will find 3 new articles there by our member Veronika Clay.  These are articles she has had published in Health and Fitness Magazine.  See Veronika's Website.    I also posted an interview of me by the Davis Co-op.  The Davis Food Co-op is becoming more raw-food aware, and hopefully I won't pre-empt them in any way by including my written interview transcript here.    Lastly, if any of you are using an internet browser OTHER than Microsoft's Internet Explorer, would you kindly reply to our WebStaff and tell us which browser you may regularly be using (such as Mozilla, Netscape, etc.).  --Mark Blackburn

Raw Falafel
From Raw Power By Stephen Arlin, pg 136

1 1/2 cups - Walnuts
1 1/2 cups - Macadamia Nuts
2 tablespoons chopped parsley
2 tablespoons chopped chives
2 tablespoons Raw Sesame Tahini

1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
1 clove garlic, minced
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon Sea Salt

Soak nuts for 15 minutes, then drain. Mix all ingredients with a wooden spoon in a large mixing bowl. Then put all ingredients through a Champion Juicer with the blank plate, or a green power or green star with the tension knob removed. Add up to ½ cup water, if necessary. After processing, mix all ingredients thoroughly with clean hands. With the Falafel mixture, mixture, make a small ball (ping pong sized), then flatten the ball to make a patty. Put the patty on a mesh dehydrator tray. Continue until all the mixture is used up . Dehydrate for 8-10 hours at 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Makes 35 - 40 patties. Enjoy!

Don't forget to review the events  calendarI would especially like to highlight the Modern Manna Health & Healing Crusade on June 24 - 27.  This event is sponsored by a Christian Ministry and is bringing in some of the nations top experts in health including  Dr. T. Colin Campbell, director of the world's largest and most authoritative study on diet and health;  Howard Lyman, the 'Mad Cowboy;' Dr. Lorraine Day, Charlotte Gerson, Dr. John McDougall and others.  The event is free, but of course they ask for donations.  It is a superb conference with nationally recognized experts.  (At a few moments it will feel like a Revival or Campmeeting...but it is an excellent conference).

The Boutenko Children will be in Sacramento on Wednesday Evening, June 16, with a food prep class including dinner and recipes for just $25.  More details will be forthcoming.

Also see RawStock II, a Raw-Food Festival in Sebastopol, CA on Aug 28-30 featuring Dr. Doug Graham and others.

Can you help one of our members in need?   For two years Larry and Diane Walters graciously opened their home in West Sacramento to us for Raw Sacramento events.  They contributed a lot of their time to helping Raw Sacramento grow.  They are now in need of some help.  Have you wanted to help, but not known how?  Here's an easy way to help our group.  As an added bonus you will learn about the Gerson Therapy for cancer (one of the most successful non-toxic curative protocols for cancer).

Here's the request I received from Larry.  Please reply directly to him.  If you have any trouble reaching Larry, please call Mark at 916.444..6500.

-Mark

Hello Mark,

I would like to have you send out an informational message to the Raw Sacramento mailing list.  This message is intended to provide a brief status of my current health challenge and to ask for assistance.

I have been diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus and have investigated all my options, including alternative therapies.  I've decided on the Gerson Therapy (see website www.gerson.org for details).

Using the Gerson Nutritional Therapy, I am juicing carrots, apples, and a green drink from fresh organic vegetables.  I have to juice and drink and cleanup after 13 juices per day.  Part of the therapy is a heavy detoxification program and supplements.  Plus I will need to get as much rest as possible while detox is cleaning out my system.

My wife, Diane has to work every day, so she helps me to prepare ahead for some of the juices and meals.  That still leaves a large amount of work for me each day.

I am requesting some volunteers to help me each day.  I would accept someone who can occasionally help, who can help once per week on a set time, or up to once per month on a set time.  I will provide any training that would be required.  It will be mostly preparing and cleanup for the juicing using a Norwalk Juicer.

If you feel that you can help with my Healing Therapy, please call me or Diane at 916.376..0860.

Thank you and God bless,

Larry & Diane Walters

Rich and Carol at our May 2004 Potluck

Our June Potluck will be held at our McKinley Park location.  Please note that we eat away from the picnic tables, so bring a lawn or beach chair to suit.  If someone can bring a card table or two, that would be appreciated.  More Info on our upcoming June 6 Potluck.

Raw Almonds RECALL - California - Trader Joe's,
Costco,
Kirkland... See
link and text below for full story.

Source:

http://www.newsday.com/news/nationworld/nation/wire/sns-ap-almonds-recall,0,703034.story?coll=sns-ap-nation-headlines

May 19, 2004, 12:47 AM EDT WASHINGTON -- A California
company is recalling 5 million pounds of raw almonds sold
nationwide after the Food and Drug Administration received seven reports of food
poisoning.

Paramount Farms Inc. of Los Angeles said Tuesday the
recalled almonds may contain salmonella, a harmful germ that can cause
food poisoning.  The recall covers 2.7 million packages of raw almonds
sold under the brand names Kirkland Signature, Sunkist and Trader
Joe's. The FDA received reports that the seven people in Alaska,
Arizona, Oregon,  Washington and Utah were sick with salmonella
enteritidis, a type of food poisoning. In five cases, consumers had bought
the almonds from Costco Wholesale Inc. in Oregon, Paramount said in a
statement. Young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune
systems are especially vulnerable to infection from salmonella. In
some cases, it is fatal. The company noted that the those who became
sick have recovered.

"While no salmonella has been found in Paramount
products, we have taken this step out of an abundance of caution and to assure
our customers and consumers of the quality and safety of our products,"
said David Szeflin, Paramount's vice president of operations. The
recalled almonds sold under the Kirkland Signature brand are
specifically labeled as raw.

They were sold in 3-pound, lay flat plastic bags and
stamped with a "best before" date from 8/21/04 to 2/8/05. Recalled
almonds sold under Trader Joe's and Sunkist brands were marked with "best
before dates" of 8/21/04 to 3/15/05. The almonds sold by Trader Joe's
are in 1-pound packages, labeled as "nonpareil variety almonds. Those
sold by Sunkist are in 10-ounce bags and are marked as "raw natural
whole almonds.

Consumers who have the recalled almonds are asked to
return them to the stores where they bought them. Anyone with questions
about the recall can reach Paramount on Wednesday starting at 3 p.m.
EDT by calling 1-800-496-5168. Paramount said it is cooperating with
federal regulators as their investigation continues.

Can you help Raw Sacramento?

Here are 2 ways you could help Raw Sacramento:

1.  Hosting a 2004 Potluck (In the Fall and Winter)

I have updated our potluck schedule indicating the dates in 2004 for potlucks.  What we need now are homes at which we could have these potlucks.  Our participation is trending up—our November potluck had 40 individuals.  If you are the host, you do not need to prepare a dish.  And, you don't need to drive.  The food comes to you!  Here's some information about hosting a potluck

2.  Writing a Raw Food Testimony

Have you eaten much more raw food than previously for at least 2 months?  Did you experience any health improvements?  Would you be willing to write a 'Raw Food Testimony?"   We would like to post more of these.  If you have concrete, documentable health improvements and can write a few paragraphs about your experience, it may influence and help others.  Would you please send us your Testimony?
